Tick, tick, tick . . .

December 28, 2010

That was the ominous sound of my patience wearing out today in a consignment store with Mom.

We stopped there yesterday, only to find they were closed. Since it’s a small, independently-owned shop, I figured maybe they closed for the holiday week. This morning, Aud said, “You know, I think I remember that the consignment shop is closed on Mondays, so we should try again today.” She goes there once a year, when she visits at Christmas. She doesn’t remember when she tells the same story for the third time, yet she can remember the store hours for a store she last set foot in a year ago. Talk about selective memory!

So we head there again this morning. Lo and behold, they are indeed open. Mom promptly sits down and starts pawing through the jewelry (my least favorite activity in the world, I think). I start going through the racks and picking out some things for her to try on. Once Mom’s done with the jewelry, she goes through the clothes herself in case there’s something I missed (there wasn’t).  We head back to the fitting room, and here’s where it starts to unravel.

The store is arranged with all the clothing by size. We had both already looked at the racks for Mom’s size. But as we head back, she keeps stopping and picking up other items.

“Mom, that’s not your size.”

Two more steps:

“Mom, that’s three sizes too big.”

Another couple of steps:

“Mom! These racks aren’t your size!”

We’re almost at the fitting room: so close, but still so far away:

Repeat on our way from the fitting room to the cashier. Tick, tick, tick . . .

At least it wasn’t for naught. Aud got three tops.

Couple that incredible shopping memory with her incredible shopping stamina. She was in the upscale thrift store in MI so long I had to go sit down!
