Italy: Day 12 – Orvieto

March 13, 2010

WEDNESDAY, April 23, Umbria to Orvieto

Today we leave Spoleto, and our apartment, which we’ve mostly loved for the past week, especially the satellite tv!

We drive to Orvieto, and easily find the bed and breakfast Valentina (see separate review). Orvieto is a wonderfully walkable town, and we spend the remainder of the day exploring. The façade of the duomo is simply breathtaking, and I especially like the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament inside. We once again learn some Catholic history: the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted because of the miracle that occurred in a nearby town when a priest who doubted the transubstantiation had a host bleed as he consecrated it. The corporal with the blood is displayed in Orvieto, in the Blessed Sacrament chapel.

Whenever I read about the striped stone exterior, I thought it sounded kind of awful, but it’s striking to see in person. The interior of the church is fairly plain compared to other duomos we’d seen, and as a result, seems just cavernous.

We wander around the town, shopping for pottery and picking up a bottle of Orvieto Classico, their renown white wine. The views from Orvieto to the valleys below are spectacular.
